He said “Yeah, you make a pile, and you put on lighter fluid, and you set it on fire”. His first answer was “You could make a fire out of them”. I sat Jamal down and asked him the same thing. Jasmine told me that there was really only one use for a paper clip. The question was simple: in 5 minutes, give me as many uses as possible for a paper clip.įor fun I tried it out on my kids. Maybe that was why he was behind? I asked how he’d compare if he was in the year below, they shook their head and said “he would still be at the very bottom of the class”.Ī while later our company was scaling up recruitment and we were playing with a number of different interview questions and tests. The same year Jamal’s teacher told us that he was having very significant difficulties with basic skills like writing and spelling. As they showed us the results they lowered their voice and shook their head in disbelief. When Jasmine was 8 her teacher told us she had scored higher in a set of tests than any child that had ever taken them at that school. We sent them both to the same nice local private school. My eldest 2 children, Jasmine and Jamal, were born a year apart.
